As a cold, grey dawn broke over the heath in Hampstead, Sherlock Holmes andDr. Watson silently crept out the large leaded-glass doors that led to the garden and orchards as Holmes followed the trail of clues left by the missing Countess Faversham and her unexpected early-morning departure .
The sleuths moved through the many varities of trees quickly as Holmes stopped, here and there,to observe a broken twig or disturbed leaf by which he could divine the movements of his prey.
When they stopped at the base of one particular tree, Holmes looked back in the direction of the manor from which they had just
come, and stated flatly, “Watson, the Countess Faversham is no doubt, at thisvery moment, back at her manor having her morning tea!”
Watson stood confounded, and said “Holmes, I understand how you can see the trail you were following has turned back towards the Faversham estate, but I think it is pure bombast on your
part to assert what activity occupies her at this moment… having tea, humph!”
Holmes motioned to the freshly broken branch of the tree and said “This is how I know, old chum.” Watson stared at the branch in silence, betrayed by his mystified look, which told Holmes he did not understand it’s signifigance.
Holmes reached out to place a hand on his faithful companions shoulder, andin a soft, low voice he exclaimed ” It’s a lemon tree, my Dear Watson.”
